Community Unites in Memory of ‘Herbie’

Community Unites in Memory of ‘Herbie’ to Raise Mental Health Awareness and Funds for Local Mind Charity

A heartfelt community event brought together friends, footballers, and families this week as Herbie’s Herberts faced off against Man vs Fat in a special charity football match supporting Havant and East Hants Mind—a local mental health charity working to improve wellbeing, tackle stigma, and provide vital services to those affected by mental health conditions.

This event served as a moving tribute to Herbie, a much-loved figure known for his effortless charisma, boundless humour, and ability to light up a room with nothing more than a grin. Described as someone who “left behind laughter, love, and unforgettable memories,” Herbie’s legacy was honored through powerful words, determined action, and passionate play.

“This isn’t just about football—it’s about friendship, remembrance, and showing up for something that matters,” said organisers. “Every shout, cheer, and kick carried with it the spirit of Herbie—his laughter, his drive, and the way he brought people together.”

Raising Awareness, Honouring a Legacy

The match celebrated not only Herbie’s life but also the resilience of the men who took to the pitch. From their 20s to 50s, these players have committed themselves week after week to train, despite bruises, battle scars, and challenges. Their efforts are not just athletic but emotional—pushing for a cause that has deep meaning for them all.

“They’ve pushed themselves not for glory, but for Herbie, and for the cause that brought us all together.” said organisers.

The event also highlighted the important work of Havant and East Hants Mind, whose mission is to support local people struggling with mental health issues, provide community-based support, and reduce stigma. Contributions raised during the event go directly toward delivering these vital services in the local community.

About the Teams

  • Herbie’s Herberts: Friends of Herbie for over 30 years, the team came together to celebrate his memory with passion and heart. As the ‘gaffer’ noted, “They won’t get public praise or thanks, but what they’ve done in Herbie’s memory will never be forgotten.”
  • Man vs Fat: A powerful grassroots movement helping men improve their mental and physical health through football. Their message is clear—“It’s not just about weight loss, but building community, connection, and hope.” With over £15,000 raised through various initiatives in the past two years, this team continues to make a significant impact both on and off the field.

Make Today Count

The day was filled with laughter, remembrance, and pride. Attendees were reminded of the power of community, the importance of mental health support, and the need to keep showing up for one another, on the pitch and in life.

“Herbie brought people together, and now we carry that energy forward, not just for one match, but in the way we show up for each other every day.”
