Workplace wellbeing is hugely important. Having staff that can support each other is an essential resource. The financial impact of poor mental health on organisations is well documented (£1119- £1481 on average costs per employee for all employees employed regardless if they are ill or not). This includes, sickness absence, less detectable presenteeism (poor productivity) and recruitment/staff turnover costs. This does not include the human costs, impact on customers, the further costs to local or national government and economy.
However the financial return on investment of workplace mental health interventions are overwhelmingly positive. Metadata evidence shows workplace wellbeing interventions deliver return on investment on average of £4.20 per £1 spent (with a range of between 40p and £9).*
In the Havant and East Hants Mind Hampshire 2020-21 study of 302 trainees 23% of post training questionnaire respondents had used Connect 5 at work to support a member of staff /volunteer in the 3- 12 months post completion of the course. In this context there was evidence to suggest Connect 5 could deliver returns on investment in Hampshire as a result of the workplace wellbeing training investment.
A total investment of £36,645 in Connect 5 training may have translated into a £8428.35 (23%) investment in workplace wellbeing within statutory and voluntary agencies.
Using the logic in the Stephenson /Farmer review* the evidence suggests this investment could be now delivering to Hampshire voluntary and statutory agencies the following impact savings of, low estimate, £11799.69 to, high estimate, £75855.15 – more than double the whole contract value.*
Even when applying the logic purely to volunteers – volunteer recruitment, retention and illness has significant financial implications for all sectors.
