Understanding Suicide Intervention

SFA (Suicide First Aid) is an evidence-based programme, assured by City & Guilds, that takes a population-based approach to suicide prevention.

It teaches both the theory and practical skills of suicide intervention as a first-aid response, helping to foster a culture of suicide-safety in the workplace. This programme is ideal for employees seeking to build their understanding and confidence to safely support individuals at risk of suicide.

Course duration timings

1 day course 9.30 – 4.30pm with breaks throughout

Course objectives/Content

Knowledge to spot the signs of someone who may be thinking about suicide
Confidence to intervene and help create a suicide-safety plan as a first aid approach
Skills to offer support to someone in distress or who may be experiencing suicide thoughts
Knowledge of helpful and destigmatising language when talking about suicide
A deep understanding of how you would have a supportive conversation with someone who needs to stay safe from suicide
An understanding of factors that contribute to suicide thoughts

Course format

The course can be run Online or face to face

Structured across four sessions. Each session is 1hr 30min, with intermittent breaks throughout
All course materials are digital
Learning takes place through an instructor-led live session with group activities and discussions

Eligibility/numbers

Suitable for anyone 16 years old +
Up to 16 delegates per course (We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn)
